2018. A new year. A year full of possibilities. A year full of dreams. A year full of hope.
Most everyone struggles with family members at one time or another, that’s just life. Being transgender can add to those struggles and lead to conflicting opinions coming from every direction leading you to fear, uncertainty and doubt.

I was sitting with my friend Julie a few nights ago who was sharing about the time she learned her grandmother, whom she deeply loved had stage four cancer and about six months to live.
…the thought of having to face her grandmother knowing death was in her future just brought the tears out again.
Julie’s grandmother was in the hospital as was Julie when they got the news. When she heard of the diagnosis and the prognosis, Julie was grief stricken. After all, she works basically as a grief and guidance counselor for individuals and their families at this very hospital facing situations exactly like this. As a result she knew what it meant, and what her grandmother would be going through the next several months.
But even with all her knowledge and background in this very subject, Julie couldn’t even go into her grandmother’s room, she couldn’t turn off the tears and didn’t want to have her grandmother see her falling apart in sadness and grief. Why do we all have to be “right”? Why do we have to think that “we” are better than “they” are? Why do we all have to think that God is on “our” side and not “theirs”?

These days evangelical Christians seem to be the easy target for being hypocrites when they say they have issues with those in the LGBT community. But I would like to propose that we ALL have issues that need to be dealt with as we relate to others.

When I grew up words like racist or (pick-your-term)phobia weren’t used much. Back in the day we just called it being prejudice. It means pretty much what it sounds like – to prejudge. It’s defined as “an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.”

Who reading this hasn’t been to a wedding that ended with the minister saying “What therefore God has joined together, let no one put asunder”? What exactly does that mean?
The phrase is a quote of Jesus in Mark 10:9 using the King James language. The word “asunder” actually dates all the way back to the 14th century and is from the verb “sundar” which means “to break apart” or “in two.” When a marriage has integrity, it is whole. The two people are one family. When a marriage doesn’t have integrity, just as when the hull of a boat loses integrity and begins to leak, cracks form within the marriage and if not corrected it will completely fail, just like the boat taking on water. I keep seeing posts from guys and gals thinking that because they are transgender that therefore, God must not love them and that being who you are is somehow a defiance of God’s will. That you are in disobedience of God.

You know, life throws curve balls at everyone at one time or another. For some more frequently than others. For some longer than for others. And for some, it starts sooner than for others, even as soon as birth and it’s with you for your whole life.
So many times, especially when it’s not really a big thing, a huge part of your life or just something they have no idea what else to say – people are at times quick to say “well, I guess it’s just your cross to bear”.

Earlier today a friend of mine shared a post with these words, and they are good words. They were originally posted by a group that helps people in recovery. They spoke of how we weren’t designed to live alone or in isolation. How we all need community, and for those in recovery from addictions a Christian community that can help point them to Jesus for the strength to overcome what they struggle with.
I can’t disagree with that one bit.

On Facebook people joke, people laugh, people taunt their friends in a friendly way. Something I saw tonight online just registered with me and I wanted to share it.
I’m a Texas Longhorn football fan. The university I went to in California was greatly respected for it’s music program, but unfortunately sports wasn’t its claim to fame. So you won’t find me wearing my old college colors and rooting for them because well, even in college we didn’t keep track all that much how they were doing.
But, NOW I live in Austin, Texas. You don’t live in Austin unless you’re a Texas Longhorn fan and maybe, just maybe an alumni of Texas A&M which is a hour and a half away. So shy of being an Aggie’s fan, it’s pretty much all about the Longhorns – and after moving here I was on board. It’s an exciting team to watch – ALWAYS lots of drama because if you’re not #1 in the entire country – well heads are bound to roll (and plenty of them have.)
